Berlin, Vienna, London: The Hamas Cell That Hunted Europe's Jews — and the One Sentence That Settles an Old Debate

The Federal Prosecutor's Office in Karlsruhe announced it on Friday: an indictment was filed Tuesday with the Berlin Higher Regional Court against seven alleged Hamas members. Two Germans, three Lebanese, a Bulgarian and a Dane, arrested between October 2025 and last May. The charges are heavy: "membership in a foreign terrorist organization," "preparation of a serious act of violence endangering the state," and multiple violations of weapons law.

According to investigators, it all begins in July 2025. Senior officials of the Islamist movement task five men with procuring weapons and ammunition in Germany, for attacks planned in Germany and Austria around the second anniversary of October 7, 2023. When the first three suspects are arrested in October 2025, the group already holds an automatic rifle, thirteen pistols and more than 700 rounds of ammunition. Another man, arrested in London in November and prosecuted separately, had ferried some of those weapons to Vienna and recorded a video claiming responsibility.

First lesson: this is not the "Gaza resistance" being exported; it is a European infrastructure. None of the seven defendants is described as coming from Gaza. Hamas recruits German and Danish citizens to kill Europe's Jews, and its logistics run through three capitals: Berlin for the arsenal, Vienna for the delivery, London for the courier and his video. Not a lone wolf radicalized on his phone: a chain of command that, according to prosecutors, reaches all the way to the top of the organization.

Second lesson: the denial. At the time of the first arrests, Hamas denied any link to the three men. Germany's federal prosecutors have now brought their evidence before a court. Between the word of a terrorist organization and the indictment of a state governed by the rule of law, everyone will choose whom to trust.

But the decisive detail lies in a single sentence from the prosecutors, the one that defines the targets: "representatives of Israel, people of Jewish faith or people with pro-Israeli positions." Three categories joined by a simple "or." For two years, part of the European debate has exhausted itself distinguishing an anti-Zionism presented as legitimate from an antisemitism deemed condemnable. Hamas, for its part, has settled the question. In its operational plan, the Israeli diplomat, the Jew walking out of synagogue and the non-Jew who defends Israel are interchangeable. Prosecutors did not write that sentence to make a theoretical point; they wrote it because that is what the investigation established.

What this changes for Europe's Jewish communities is twofold. First, the threat does not run on Gaza's calendar: the cell was set up in July 2025, the arsenal assembled by October, and nothing suggests a ceasefire or a diplomatic conference would have disarmed a cache of pistols in Berlin. Second, the response that works is the one Germany applied here: treat Hamas as a terrorist organization, trace its chain of command and cooperate from one capital to the next.

What if the Karlsruhe file became the reference document of the European debate? Every time a politician explains that one can "support the cause" without threatening Jews, they should be confronted with this target list — drafted not by a pro-Israel activist, but established from Hamas's own orders. For the Jews of France, the question is simple: how many caches of this kind are still waiting for their anniversary date, and how many prosecutors are ready to go find them?
